Allot of great stuff last Monday!

I don't know where to start. Of the most memorable and favorite; Gorrilla, Dickerdoodles, Whiteboard Comic Strip, Stop Motion, and if anyone knows Tobias from Arrested Development... "I Just Blue Myself!" And the rest were great as well! Damn you course evaluations!

Where's all the food?

Having lived in the middle of nowhere and having to drive through miles of farm land to get anywhere I say to hell with it. I want to dive to work and pass gas stations and wal-marts, housing additions and apartment projects. Why in the world do we need these tiny little 2-5 hundred acre farms taking up valuable real estate. They've already came up with a solution to the food problem, if we use the right combination of chemicals we can grow our food in more abundance in a smaller plot of land. Why else did we let these corporate farming operations buy up the independent farmer? The corporation can provide us with food cheaper than the farmer can and it isn't my fault these stupid farmers can't keep up with the times. Boo Hoo, I lost the farm my grand pappy bought back in the twenties from some other stupid farmer that couldn't hack it. This is 2008, get with the times!
I hope you all can understand sarcasm because the way the corporations and us as consumers have treated the ones that provide our food is f*ck*d!

Fireflys

Why do japanamation characters look like Caucasians? Aside from wondering this I thought the movie was very well done. I agree that it would have taken on a totally different feel if it were live action. I found it interesting that it was taken from the perspective of the Japanese. So many war movies of that time show the poor German and Polish Jews, the poor Hawaiians. Although the Japanese (government) did allot of horrific things as well did the Americans, many people tend to loose sight that not everyone in a particular country supports their governments decision. If you look at our relations today with other counties, it is evident that allot of people still think we are all at fault for our counties wrong doing. I myself always try to find the good in everyone.

Waffle Iron Jewelry Boxes

I thought some pictures might illustrate what I saw on my gallery visit. You can view more at http://www.mevansdesign.com

I love the idea of turning junk into something really nice. The objects themselves have a great design but if you have an old broken waffle iron or cigarette machine what do you do. Recycling design.

WHAT?!?! (inspires me)

When I first thought about this assignment I kept trying to think of what inspired me without thinking about what I needed inspiration for. I take my greatest amount of inspiration (next to life inspiration) from things in my own medium. This is photography and video. I am constantly looking at other people's work to inspire me whether its good or bad. I most generally find inspiration in what many may consider nonsense, some consider art, and some consider innovation. Any way, here are some videos I keep in my favorites that usually help when I'm having brain lock. Enjoy... or don't, doesn't really matter to me either way.

New media parades and pants canons

I was quietly sitting outside minding my own business when it happened, for some inexplicable reason, around the corner of West and Michigan came what appeared a pirate ship. As I saw it coming I could see other objects following, an elephant, unclothed something or anothers, what looked like a green screen of giant cats destroying the city. As the pirate came further down he street I saw a glimpse of something shiny spit forth from it's hand. I was only able to make out the words "Adobe" and "Suite" scribbled in black sharpie on a burnt DVD before it shattered against the wall behind me. Then that was when it happened, I saw people walking around with what appeared to be canons before I lost consciousness. When I awoke I found myself lying on the sidewalk with a pair of keyboard pants covering my face. Was this all a dream? No. Apparently it was the "New Media Parade", whatever "New Media" is.
Honestly my only contribution to this idea was a car with a theremin antenna, but apparently no one knew what a theremin was and no one seemed interested in learning. So... someone came up with the idea of a petting zoo and I was quick with the suggestion of a holographic petting zoo.
On my own brainstorming, I couldn't help but remember when Heron was over in the old building and they would have outdoor installations. I specifically remember an art car exhibit when there were about a half dozen or so cars in the front yard decorated by students. I always enjoyed seeing stuff like that and I think there should be more of it on campus. Perhaps a New Media art installation of a holographic petting zoo in front of the IT building.
Behold the Theremin

2 1/2 Hours of Ignorance

So I recently started a job at IN.gov doing web maintenance from 9-1 on Mondays and 9-5 Tues through Fri. I am also delivering pizzas from 10-5 Sat and Sun (for now). In addition to this I have an Advanced Sound class and a Visual Basics class (I recommend the VB.NET class for anyone needing a CS class as it is fairly "basic"). Anyway my point is that I thought I lost any way of having a continuous 2.5 hours to spend doing as I like. Then I found out I had Columbus Day off work (IN.gov) so after church on Sunday night I came home and decided to catch up on some of my favorite television programs thanks to HULU. These shows included an episode of The Office, a couple episodes of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and a couple episodes of Trailer Park Boys. Did this inspire any creativity? Not really. But it did give me much relaxation and these shows are always good for a laugh. I do think that all three shows are very well written (except for the first several seasons of The Office which were total rip offs of the British version). I also have a tendency to feed off other people's creativity (feed, not steal). Shows like this also keep me from taking things too seriously, like stress from school or work. Anyway, I was able to feed off other's creativity while doing this assignment but other than that I really appreciate the opportunity to complete an assignemnt by fat*ssing my poor neglegted couch.

What the @^%$ did I just sit through.

I believe that quantum physics is allot of b.s. but not quite total b.s. Most of it seems like allot of "What if?"s. I've stopped questioning the physical realm since I haven't dropped acid in over a decade, and I don't want to. I like reality. However I have been taken into what seemed like alternate realities or dimensions. I can remember it being night yet everything was as bright as day. Was that true reality? More like a bunch of chemicals using my brain like a chew toy. During these years of my life I had a lot of questions, like "are we just figments of a greater imagination? do things exists around us that we can't see? is there energy in everything? how can I absorb that energy?" etc.etc. I'm afraid if people get too rapped up in questioning what is really real they will never find any answers. What's wrong with having faith in something, weather it is having faith that this table is going to be here even without me in the room, or faith that everyone has the ability to do good, or a faith in God? I'm probably rambling but I think it is alright to be curious about things. It is just wise to know what the question is. I would guess that quite a few people in that movie dropped acid at some point in there life. I wish I never had but I thank God that I was able to maintain my sanity, my wits, and my faith.

A 6th sence?

Maybe a sense that something is about to happen, or that someone has entered the room... maybe.

That smell that is around you

Not only did I skip a post Saturday but I didn't make a video for the last two. I'll live. Anyway, smell... I appreciate my sense of smell... most of the time. I hate it when there is a bad smell then you start to taste it, like garbage, that smells like garbage, now I have an idea of how garbage tastes! Favorite smells, saw dust in winter, rain, new car, industrial parts cleaner, new shoes, pie, grandma's house, etc. etc. Smells I don't like, kim chee, pet stores, everyone else's B.O., poo, road kill, etc. etc.
One final note, I was listening to a story on NPR about how allot of New Media people in California wind up taking jobs in porno because of lack of work. These are camera people, editors, web programmers etc. There was one guy that said the worst part about the job was the smell. I'll just leave it at that.

All touch... but no contact

Just the other night I saw a commercial for Kleenex and it was following some lady through her daily routine with all the things she touches, touch, touch, touch, touch, touch. It's odd how you can tune out feeling then tune into any specific aspect of it and there it is, like the protrusions of f & j on my keyboard, my armrest digging into my ribs, and my foot twisted underneath me. I'm not looking forward to winter for I have trouble tuning out the reoccurring ache in my shoulder.
On the same topic of feeling, it always makes me think of shape and texture of objects. Like the kids books that have little swatches as examples. I've had this object in my kitchen for a few months and can't seem to get rid of it till I photograph it because of the shape and texture. To get a full 306 view of it I've filmed it.

How I loath compression!

What?... Thoughts on hearing!

Hearing would probably be my second favorite sense. I enjoy music allot, from metal to jazz, from rap to bluegrass. I would be very upset to part with this sense. Beyond music, there are sounds I would miss such as the gentle quiet when I'm at home, my cat's incessant meowing when I get home, the sound of my truck as it goes down the road, and the sound of my girlfriend snoring (even though that one drives me nuts). When I sit at my computer, often times the only thing I hear is the refrigerator, my hard drive, the occasional plane, or farm trucks. Even though I have my hearing I enjoy peace and quiet.
So here is a video I shot of the sunset on my way home the other night. The sound was very peaceful however the mechanics of my camera interfered. You may also need to turn up the volume.

Now... random thoughts on sight

Sight or hearing are my two favorite senses. Could I live without them? Sure. But I prefer not. I live in the middle of nowhere and I can't think of living in the city, I tried it, didn't care much for it. I would miss seeing the sun cut through the trees or corn in the evening, to see deer walking past my bedroom window, to see unmolested snow in the wilderness from my warm kitchen, to see my two cats cuddling in a sunny spot on my deck, and to see my girlfriend smile at me. I find myself fortunate that God has given me the gift to see these things and if he ever sees it fit to take them away I will always have my memories, for this I give thanks.
Here's a video I shot while driving around where I live, I pass my driveway at 36 seconds.

Random thoughts on taste

Taste? It is always such a great feeling, and a great taste after brushing ones teeth. The draw back to this is when you either smoke, drink, or eat immediately afterwards. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth for hours so I have to make a conscious effort not to do those things.
I also decided to make a short video of my cat eating a paper sack, mmmm paper!

What if... (cont.)... (cont.)

51) What if everyone actually read each others blogs, gave input, feedback, at least constructive criticism (without being either stuck up or picky unless it was constructively!

I was crying myself to sleep last night because I never get any comments on my page and my poor fragile ego blah blah blah. Seriously though, I've never left comments for anyone so I thought it time to start throwing my opinion around, but only constructively, at least that's the goal. This will be an ongoing thing so if I haven't left a comment on your page, I will. I imagine this may be more fulfilling than Chuck Norris on toast, Then again...

What if... (cont.)

What if Chuck Norris appeared in your bathroom?
So i found several questions to ponder and this is what came from my brain. My morning ritual includes a shower first thing in the morning followed by breakfast, usually toast. So that is why Chuck is in my toast and not in my bathroom, also because I don't want Chuck in my bathroom. There may be another entry on Sunday depending on what I can think up.

Thoughts on our "time" together last week

I would say that everyone had their own concept of time and what to do on the subject. I would say the ones that stood out would be Jeremiah's because it seemed to be absent of some elements of time yet full of others. The legacy video was also pretty good, makes you think.

I have a funeral to attend in the morning so I may be a bit late tomorrow.

What if this was not a blog?

I really don't enjoy "what if" questions because I can't help but think "who cares?". I do however find that it takes you into the depths of another persons thoughts and process of thinking. I guess some of them are to make you think yet others are idiotic or mundane. Anyway, if you read it, try to enjoy at least some of it.

1 What if you never had to work again?
2 What if you were never able to work again?
3 Would you take another persons life if yours depended on it?
4 Would you give up your own life if it meant saving another?
5 What would you do if you were stupid?
6 What would you do if you knew you were stupid?
7 What if you were never able to be physically comfortable again?
8 What if there were only four dwarfs?
9 What if this post never becomes rambling?
10 What if you were forced to leave your home?
11 What if you were forced to leave your country?
12 What if you were never able to leave your country?
13 What if you were never able to leave your home?
14 What if you were never able to laugh?
15 What if you were never able to see anything green?
16 What if you were never able to hear anything other than dog whistles?
17 What if you quit feeling joy?
18 What if you never remembered anything past five minutes?
19 What if you never had to worry about anger or sorrow?
20 What if you were allergic to everything?
21 What if marijuana was legal?
22 What if you lost all creativity?
23 What if there were no animals left on earth, excluding fish?
24 What if you were framed for a crime you didn’t commit?
25 What if you were never able to get decent employment?
26 What would you do if you were faced with an intruder?
27 What if if were if if if seemed ify?
28 What would you do if you simply had no concept of math?
29 What if someone you love did something felonious?
30 What if you only got ten stations on your TV?
31 What if you had to live without the Internet?
32 What if you had no social interaction with anyone ever again?
33 What if the EV1 was still in production?
34 What if you were unable to drive anywhere?
35 What if all governments were willing to compromise?
36 What if communism slips into our country?
37 What if you heard circus music in your head constantly?
38 What if you got scurvy?
39 What if the computers rebel?
40 What if the only food you are able to get is genetically enhanced?
41 What if tomorrow never comes?
42 What if midgets took over?
43 What if you never had to wait in line for anything again?
44 What if one hour of sleep a day were sufficient?
45 What if Indianapolis had sidewalk urinals?
46 What if the person sitting next to you stinks?
47 What if someone slipped you LSD?
48 What if graffiti were legal?
49 Would you use the subway if Indianapolis built one?
50 What if you started to cry uncontrollably in public for no reason?

Percistence of Time

time n 1: period during which something exists or continues or can be accomplished 2: point at which something happens 3: customary hour 4: age 5: tempo 6: moment, hour, day, or year as indicated by a clock or calender 7: one's experience during a particular period ~ vb timed; timing 1: arrange or set the time of 2: determine or record the time, duration, or rate of

The last time I had a class in our room was a history of jazz with the late Jack Gilfoy, who was also an amazing jazz drummer. I remember learning about "free jazz" where people like Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor would just play whatever with no regard for key or tempo.
I decided to match some music that had an odd timing to video that had something, anything to do with time. I found some banjo music that seemed all over the place and merged it with some old super 8 footage I took probably 8 or 9 years ago of armature stock car racing.
So... the music is old (recorded in 1959) and off tempo. The video uses old super 8 stock that was filmed several years ago. The video also contains events that occur in a point in time. Finally it took a long time to upload this video as it was 75megs. All in all this is just what came out of my head.

Eggcellence

First off, I don't recall any egg projects that sucked... eggs. They were all varied in the idea and concept but the one that stood out to me was Stephanie's Egg & Zachly. Not because it kind of had my name in there but I found her comic strips to be entertaining. I also love comics where I don't have to read a great deal. Evan's egg video also made me laugh.

Everyone point and laugh! and dip!

Page 204 there are allot of illustrated fingers pointing (in the same direction). My first thought was to look at the next page, but no, I must look at the fingers and find what they are trying to say. Oh yes, there it is. They are from printer and typeset catalogues.
They do make me think of how easily we point with our finger but worse is to point at someone in judgement. There seems to be an authoritative aspect with an illustrated finger pointing as opposed to using an arrow. In the end they are only ink on paper. Where was I going with this? Be careful when following fingers at random.

Breaking yolks and tranquility through frustration

First thought: MMMM egg, scrambled with cheese.
Second thought: Pysanky? (this is dying an egg while adding wax in appropriate spots in between dyes)
I started by drilling a hole in both ends and blowing air through one hole to push the insides through the bottom. Too much pressure resulted in a good sized crack but the egg was still intact as a whole. Perhaps if I were to poor a bit of glue inside it will hold together. It held but the glue seeped from the crack and proved to prevent dying only where the glue was.
Third thought: Paint it.
I continued on and spray painted a blue layer over the entire egg. I then took a small brush and painted the black lines over the entire egg. The design is inspired by a wall in my house that I did the the same with. Anyway, I decided it could use some clear coat. While the clear coat was drying it rolled off the bench and onto the garage floor into two pieces. I pored a bit of glue (thicker this time) into one part and pieced it together then touched up the paint and finished the clear coat. I then took a picture of thus completing my new media commitments.

On the same thought of eggs, I have this magnet on my fridge, Edith the egg lady from Pink Flamingos.
